Bug in a Cup

The main aim of this exercise was to learn how to effectively use Layer masks. to move the bug into the cup psd. file I used the magic wand tool to select the white area around it and then inversed the selection to get the bug. Once in the cup file using Layer > Matting > Defringe can clean up any white background that was brought over with the bug. Once in the same file the bug was moved into position and a Reveal All Layer mask was added to the layer. Using a soft brush to paint over the bug, starting as the most submerged section and changing the opacity as it becomes less submerged slowly gives the impression of the bug being in the liquid.

To enhance the illusion the coffee is selected with the Magic wand tool and then using Filter > Distort > Zig Zag > Pond Ripples will add ripples to the liquid making it appear as the bug is actually moving the coffee. Like with the last exercise this one is very useful in leaning new techniques of merging two images together effectively and realistically.
